Hello, do you know WEC or have you heard of it? if not let's talk abaout it.
WEC is an abbreviation of world endurance championship, which is an endurance car racing world championship organized by the Automobile Club de I'Ouest (ACO) and approved by the FIA.
This endurance championship has a duration that can reach 6 to 24 hours, WEC is an event that tests the endurance of cars and drivers.
Format
The World Endurance Championship follows the format of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and features 9 endurance races including the Le Mans 24 Hours, with all races having the fastest duration of 4 hours. The calendar includes 4 races in Europe, 2 in America, 2 in Asia and 2 in the Middle East.
Eight titles are awarded each season based on the accumulated points collected. The point system used is similar to other FIA championships, drivers who are in the top 10 get points. Cars that finish 11th or more are awarded half a point. Points with a value of 1.5x are awarded for 24 hours of Le Mans.
However, unlike F1, WEC regulations tend to be more open. This is indeed done because WEC is also a place for testing the latest innovations and technologies. Maybe some of us underestimate some of the technology or devices that are currently commonly installed in today's modern cars.
But make no mistake, components such as wipers, headlights, windshield, brake discs, are some of the "simple" technologies that emerged from endurance racing. WEC continues this tradition in every draft regulation.
Class and Car
Classes and Cars are the most unique and interesting things in every racing event. In WEC itself, there are various forms of cars and also faster cars on the same track.
Broadly speaking, WEC races are divided into two categories, namely Prototype and GT. The prototype car was much more sophisticated and the appearance of this car commonly called the LMP can be traced back to the 1970s.
LMP1 car
The LMP category is intended as a forum for car manufacturers to test their innovations, this category is divided into two classes, namely LMP1, and LMP2 which is devoted to private teams. The LMP1-H is the highest caste class in any WEC race, and – for reasons of cost and resources, not regulation – can only be entered by manufacturing teams. LMP1-H also requires every car to have hybrid technology and ERS (Energy Storage System).
LMP2 car
The cars that race in the GT category have similarities with the Supercar cars that we can see on the streets. Well-known manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Ford, and Aston Martin [plus the Corvette in the Le Mans series], are ready to enliven the competition in this category.
GT class car
Like the LMP, the GT category is divided into two classes, GTE-Pro and GTE-Am. The Pro class is usually filled with factory teams or teams with support from manufacturers, such as AF Corse with Ferrari. In accordance with the word 'Pro' or professional, the majority of racers who compete in this class already have good experience in the sport of racing.
Then the class 'Am' or amateur, became the lowest caste class overall. This class provides an opportunity for amateur racers (FIA bronze license) to be able to compete in the WEC event. GTE-Am cars are also required to use specifications that are one year older than the cars competing in the Pro class.
While GT category cars are almost impossible to win overall in a WEC race, the reason why this category continues to be in demand by manufacturers and fans alike is that apart from the appearance of race cars being more relevant to street cars, exciting duels are also more common. in this category.
Driver
In general, this endurance event has at least 2 drivers for 1 team and they will take turns driving the car.
A racer does not race for themselves but for the team if one of the drivers makes a mistake that makes him out of the race then the team and his partner are out of the race.
WEC limits the minimum and maximum time drivers can drive during a race.
To race in this event, teams and drivers must pay attention to the FIA driver's license. The FIA has 4 categories of drivers' licenses, namely Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Especially for the LMP1 class, drivers who have a Bronze license are not allowed to drive it.
LMP2 cars must be powered by at least 2 or 3 drivers, and one of them must be a bronze or silver licensed racer. Meanwhile, GTE-Am cars must be strengthened by at least 2 or 3 drivers with a minimum composition of one bronze licensed driver plus one other bronze licensed driver or silver licensed driver.
